The aim of The IFAS, PHECC accredited, First Aid Responder course is to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to be a First Aid Responder.
Course objectives:
At the completion of this PHECC First Aid course learners will be able to:
• deal with life threatening or potentially life threatening conditions in the pre-hospital environment until arrival of emergency medical services.
• provide First Aid Response for conditions not thought to be life-threatening but are necessary to prevent further harm before the emergency medical services arrive.
• provide pre-hospital First Aid Response in a wide range of environments including home and recreational settings.
• display the requisite personal skills including composure, competence and self-confidence while understanding their limitations.
• recognise and be able to cope with the additional challenges provided by "Special Circumstances" for which additional training must be completed

Course Access:
To ensure the greatest opportunity for successful participation in our programes, learners are required to have a good command of English in terms of reading, writing and speaking.
This standard of proficiency is indicated by achieving or exceeding the standard of CEFR B2+ Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR). Learners who have achieved a passing grade in English at Junior Certificate level will be deemed to meet this criterion. However, learners for whom English is not their first language, are required to advise IFAS and may be required to provide evidence of proficiency. This could include completing a standardised CEFR test or equivalent.
Training, Administrative, Technical Support and Reasonable Accommodation:
SEFATS will endevour to provide any reasonable support to ensure that students complete this course successfully. Reasonable accommodation can be requested in advance of the course by sending an email to info@firstaidtrainingservices.ie. This is detailed in full in the Learner Handbook.. The Instructor will be available to discuss any needs or issues on breaks on a one to one basis or collectively. Course duration: 18 Hours delivered over three days, one through video elearning (7 hours) and followed by two days in the classroom.
Learners will be assessed on five FAR skills including CPR on the final day.
Course Delivery Methodology
This course is delivered using lecture, discussion and group work followed by practical demonstration and assessment in the classroom.
The course is highly interactive and participation is required and encouraged from learners.
Blended Learning option
Learners have an option to complete the theory the through e-learning online, followed by two days in the classroom.

PHECC First Aid Course Assessment & Time Commitment
You will be required to complete a 20 question MCQ on the final Day. Allow 4 hours for the revision of your notes in preparation for this.
Preparation for FAR Skills assessment. Your FAR and CFR skills will be assessed on the final day of the course. You will need to revise your FAR and CFR skills in advance of being assessed. Allow 2 hours for this preparation.
PHECC First Aid Responder Course Certification
On successful completion of the course, students will receive a PHECC First Aid Responder certificate.
Progression.
On completion of this course, learners can progress onto the PHECC CFR Instructor or the PHECC FAR Instructor Courses.

CFR - Cardiac First Responder
Overview:
The SEFATS, PHECC accredited, CPR Course provides comprehensive training on handling cardiac and respiratory emergencies. It equips participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to utilize an AED effectively, understand its appropriate usage and identify the individuals who should operate it. The course places significant emphasis on practical skills and active involvement of the students. It is instructor-led and incorporates video-based learning, teaching adult CPR, AED use, recognition and management of the symptoms of Stroke, Heart attack, and techniques for relieving choking in adults and children. The curriculum utilizes the Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, backed by the American Heart Association's research, enabling instructors to observe students, offer feedback and guide their skill development. By the end of the course, participants will have completed multiple cycles of CPR using a defibrillator, engendering confidence and readiness for real-life situations.
Objective:
The primary objective of this course is to equip students with the necessary knowledge and abilities to administer various life-saving techniques during emergency situations.
Course Objectives:
- Understand the fundamental principles of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
- Perform a two-minute cycle of CPR proficiently.
- Safely and effectively operate a defibrillator.
- Provide assistance to a choking individual.
Requirements:
- Participants should possess sufficient physical fitness to conduct chest compressions on a manikin while in a kneeling position.
- Effective chest compressions and ventilations must be demonstrated during the class.
- Proficiency in the English language is essential to interact with the instructor and follow the instructional DVD.
Intended Audience:
This course is designed for individuals seeking to learn CPR and AED usage, particularly those who may not require regular utilisation of these skills. Examples of potential participants include non-healthcare personnel, sports coaches, teachers, and parents. Additionally, non-acute healthcare staff such as healthcare assistants, medical secretaries and dental nurses may also benefit from this course.

Delivery Method:
The course is facilitated by an instructor who will guide participants using an instructional DVD. The medium of instruction is English.
Duration:
The course duration is one day, depending on the selected modules and the number of students enrolled.
Assessment:
Throughout the course, instructors will continually assess the progress of participants. Towards the end, students will be presented with a comprehensive CPR and AED scenario, to which they must respond appropriately. Successful completion of all necessary steps is required to pass the course.
Certification:
Upon successfully completing the course, participants will receive a credit card-sized certificate issued by FHECC. This certification remains valid for a period of 2 years. It is important to note that this course is internationally recognized, as it is certified by both the Irish Heart Foundation and the American Heart Association and PHECC
Renewal:
To maintain qualification beyond the initial two-year certification period, participants are required to attend a refresher course. Refresher training is not available for individuals without an in-date certificate..

FAR and CFR - Refresher
The refresher courses consists of a two-day training for FAR recertification and a 4 hour course for CFR recertification.
These courses are designed to update and reinforce the knowledge and skills acquired during the initial training.
It is mandatory to undergo recertification within two years of original certification, in order to keep your qualification valid.
A valid FAR or CFR certificate is a prerequisite for participating in the FAR and CFR refresher course respectively.
